1.01 History

From Sidecarwiki

The first mention of a sidecar in published materials is in a cartoon by George Moore in the January 7, 1903 issue of the British newspaper "Motor Cycling". Three weeks later a provisional patent was granted to Mr. W. J. Graham of Graham Brothers, Enfield, Middlesex. However, while chatting with the then very elderly Ivor Dennis, Australia's first Indian dealer, about 40 years ago, he seemed to recall that a sidecar had been built on a farm in Gippsland, Australia in 1901. The farmer was a real bush engineer a short distance out of Warragul, who added a frame, a wheel, and a box. It had the sidecar wheel exactly opposite the rear wheel of the bike and the front wheel would skid sideways when the outfit was accelerated. Ivor's recollection of the date may or may not be correct. It's kind of nice to think that just maybe, the first sidecar might have been constructed in Australia. If I can recall more of what Ivor shared, I shall update later. Contributed by Phil Smith.--DrDisk 07:43, 15 August 2007 (CEST)
